Attacks that Block: Some sword mode attacks have blocking frames, like the end of Spinning Slash or the start of Morph Slash. Perform Charge Phials while the gauge is yellow or above to fill a phial, which can be used in Axe Mode to perform powerful attacks. Build up too much energy and attacks will bounce off. 
Charge Gauge: Attack in Sword Mode to build up Sword Energy. Store up energy while in sword mode, and then use it to deal high damage in axe mode. 
Sword mode boasts mobility and high guard capabilities, while axe mode boasts more powerful attacks. A complex weapon with a sword & shield form and an axe form that both use a phial system. Axe form trades out defense for powerful attacks, good reach, and the phial's bonus. Sword & shield form strikes a balance between mobility, defense, and attack.
